Almo Nature has formulated its nutritional advice for cats based on the following nutritional philosophy:It’s often believed cats are simple animals to feed because of their amazing ability to adapt and survive. Unfortunately, this belief is completely false. The cat’s strict food requirements have remained unchanged over time because of their complex digestive systems… even after millennia of coexistence with humans.Let’s delve into this further:
Cats lack the instinct to drink
This innate inability traces back to the cat’s origins. Cats come from the desert and the lack of water sources meant they needed to preserve liquids gleaned from their food intake, consisting of small prey. They preserve most consumed fluids by only urinating in small amounts. When you see a kitten or a cat approach a bowl of water, you’ll notice they'll do anything except drink. There are several available solutions encouraging a cat to drink but the most effective one is providing wet food. Nutritional routines based on dry food alone are often inadequate in maintaining a cat’s hydration levels. Over time, a cat’s sedentary lifestyle coupled with other predisposing factors, can lead to health issues such as renal problems or cystitis, etc.
The cats is a strict carnivore
The intake of animal proteins for a cat is indispensable as their bodies are less able to process amino acids (protein components) from non-animal proteins. Animal proteins are therefore essential for their survival and preventing illness.
How can we help our cat?
Alternate between dry and wet food to ensure a nutritional diet for the entire year. Introduce them to the consistency of wet and dry food from a young age in order to get them used to both. Increasing the ratio of wet food reduces the caloric intake, and also increases their hydration levels, whilst providing a qualitative source of animal proteins that contain essential amino acids. In addition, alternating between white and red meat and fish recipes is not only good practice but an important tool to provide all the nutrients your cat requires without excesses or deficiencies.
How to serve these foods
Serving wet food in the morning and evening – and not leaving it more than half an hour in the bowl – is useful to ensure a fresh meal; kibble can be left at the cat’s disposal throughout the day and night.Take a look at our handy online toolthat provides an overview of all our products and their benefits so that you can choose a combination of dry AND wet food for your cat that will surely satisfy their taste buds.
