Cats and boxes: the combination is perfect and often viral as shown by themed videos or photos that rage on the web and social networks. But why can't all cats, even the haughtiest, resist the seduction of boxes, slipping into them as soon as possible? Doctor
Maria Grazia Calore, veterinarian expert in behavior, helped us to understand the reasons behind this now very famous attraction.
A great hiding place! In nature, the cat is a formidable predator: ambushes from crouching or in the position of a trench soldier to take advantage of the surprise effect on the prey are routine. So, what's better than a box from which you can pop out with a leap or from which only one paw can come out?But in nature, due to its small size, the cat is also a potential prey: finding an ideally elevated refuge, intended for relaxation or isolation, is a natural and instinctive need, often useful for avoiding clashes or stress from forced coexistence with other family members.
Cardboard, what a passion!Another reason why cats love boxes is precisely the material they are made of: cardboard. For the cat it is an excellent substrate to scratch: it is soft at the right point and holds well the pheromones deposited with the scratches that are immediately visible as the material is "ruined" much earlier than wood or fabrics.
Support and warmthIn addition to representing a happy island, the box, especially if it is large enough to adhere to the cat's body, is also a great way to avoid heat loss. In winter, therefore, our cat will find it extremely comfortable and pleasant to sleep in the smallest box he finds at home!
A treasure huntIf the box is not empty, it could turn into a place for the cat to explore in search of familiar or new smells, of hidden prey (perhaps in the form of balls, feather caps, hair bands) or of food. So, with a simple cardboard box, filled with crumpled newspaper sheets or other objects with which the cat can interact, we will create a beautiful mental activation game perfect for companion animal!Another reason why cats love boxes is precisely the material they are made of: cardboard.
